Join Eielson ODR on a long weekend getaway to the remote town of McCarty, Alaska! We will depart on Thursday, July 4th and stay at Base Camp Kennicott. Camping gear will be provided.
On Friday, our group will spilt into two groups for two different tours that will swap halfway through the day. The tours are a 2 hour Kennicott Mill Town tour and a 3 hour inflatable kayak paddling tour on Kennicott Glacier Lake. Saturday will be availble for personal exploration. We will return to Eielson on Sunday.
Mill tour: Unlike any other history tour you’ve ever taken, this 2-hr walking tour through the abandoned copper mining town of Kennecott will amaze you with the legends of the tenacious frontiersman that lived and worked here at the turn of the century! Only with St. Elias Alpine Guides can you gain exclusive access to the 14-story Concentration Mill and see the old machinery that powered this incredibly successful remote mining operation!
Paddle tour: Paddle your own packraft along the rocky “moonscape” at the toe of the Kennicott Glacier. Explore new passages that change from summer to summer, giving you access to never-before-seen alcoves in the ice. Along the way, you’ll catch incredible views of the 7,000 ft Stairway Icefall and 16,390 ft Mt. Blackburn!
